Frankincense resin is sourced from Boswellia carterii trees that grow in regions of northeastern Africa and areas near the Arabian Peninsula. Tree resin is a natural substance produced as part of the tree's protective process. When small, carefully made openings are created in the bark, the resin gradually emerges and hardens, forming a natural barrier for the tree.
This traditional harvesting method, known as tree tapping, can be carried out sustainably when performed with proper care and stewardship. Once collected, the resin ranges in color from light golden hues to deeper amber tones.
The harvested resin may be used in its natural form, ground into a powder, incorporated into aromatic preparations, or distilled to produce frankincense essential oil.
